Get Involved: Overview

For much of the 20th century, Sudan remained an obscure, unknown place for most Americans. In the beginning of the 21st century, the conflict in Darfur has mobilized a large number of activists, particularly in America, such that Sudan is regularly a topic in the media and US foreign policy circles. In addition to the crisis in Darfur, Sudan has experienced many other emergencies engendering the response of multiple humanitarian and relief organizations. This section, paired with a lesson from The Crisis in Darfur teaching module, seeks to contextualize and historicize the global social movements around Darfur, and the humanitarian operations in Sudan, providing observers, practitioners, and activists with tools to critically reflect on the meaning and possible outcomes of active engagement.
